MAUDIE, based on a true story, is an unlikely romance in which the reclusive Everett Lewis (Ethan Hawke) hires a fragile yet determined woman named Maudie (Sally Hawkins) to be his housekeeper. Maudie, bright-eyed but hunched with crippled hands, yearns to be independent, to live away from her protective family and she also yearns, passionately, to create art. Unexpectedly, Everett finds himself falling in love. MAUDIE charts Everett's efforts to protect himself from being hurt, Maudie's deep and abiding love for this difficult man and her surprising rise to fame as a folk painter.

“Terrific! Love the story, the cinematography, the performances and the soundtrack.”
“Brilliant! And an acting award for Sally Hawkins.”
“Very slow start, picked up beautifully.”
“Beautiful, sensitive story of an unusual pair of off-beat characters.”
“Sally Hawkins and MAUDIE are forces of nature like a glacier as they slowly move in with tremendous power. A dynamic woman is Sally Hawkins and Maudie Lewis.”
“Will be etched in my mind for a long time to come.”
“A gem of a character study of two poignant souls. Sally Hawkins continues to give wonderful, real performances! She embodies her characters. Ethan Hawke gives a masterful portrayal of what I believe is someone on the autistic spectrum. These two people act with their faces and body language. Thank the studio for this. What a gift on this nasty day. I will email all my friends to go see this film. Fabulous cinematography. This film also reinforces the ability of human spirit.”
“Wonderful film. Superb acting, pastorally, beautifully filmed.”
“Loved this beautifully developed relationship and understanding of her creativity. Wonderful depicted levels of love and artistic creativity.”
“Passionate and heartfelt despite a difficult subject. We can endure all this as part of film, but can we provide any more affection for the characters in real life? Probably not. Thank you for insight into our soul to love their beauty in spite of our common negative embrace of the limited and deformed.”
“A beautiful movie on making art and letting the world in. Sally Hawkins and Ethan Hawke deliver amazing performances.”
"Exquisite film, such a moving portrayal of an outsider artist. Sally Hawkins is such an extraordinary actress, so believable as this woman. She had a quiet sense of humor and strength, nice foil for her husband Everett Lewis (Ethan Hawke). Ethan Hawke was wonderful as grumpy Everett Lewis.”
“Glad to visit Nova Scotia in many seasons.”
“Loved it! Sally Hawkins’ performance was magnificent and the script, direction and cinematography was so nuanced. Some may have found the film too slow but its pace was perfect to the information and feeling it was getting across to us. Really good! Thanks!" - Jeanne K
“A beautiful film. The development of her relationship with Everett and her artwork is wonderful. I loved this film!”
