“Trying unsuccessfully for 5 years to have a child, and knowing what a strain it puts on a relationship, really touched a nerve…however the script lacked depth and substance.  It was wonderful to see MEA member Paula Reisenberg (ed note: as an extra in the film) and so many great actors.  Bette Midler made the movie watchable.  She’s amazing!  And lovely to see actors Lynn Cohen and Ben Shenkman, and my favorite restaurant (Barbetta’s) and Park (Riverside).  Not a movie I’d recommend.”

“The storyline would have benefited by at least 15 minutes worth of editing.  The superb cast were not used to their potential.  Very disappointing!”

“Ugh!  Helen Hunt playing her usual one-dimensional ‘Debbie Downer’ role.  The saving graces were Bette Midler and Colin Firth.”

“Bette Midler and Colin Firth were terrific.”

“This should have been a ‘Lifetime’ movie.”

“The ending made no sense.  Why would she need to adopt a child when she’s with a man with 2 children?”

“Helen was great.  Bette Midler was as always fantastic.  Babies don’t make a woman but they are a wonderful distraction in life.”

“Helen Hunt has one expression, squinty worried.  Justifiably, she has no talent and will get poor reviews for this inadequate excuse of a film.”

“Worst movie I have seen in ages!”

“Would make Dr. Phil cringe!”

“Good questions raised as to what constitutes a family.”

“Enjoyable lengthy soap opera.”

“Neither romantic nor comedic, but it was tedious.  Steve McQueen is rolling in his grave.”

“I did love the ending!”

“Hunt’s performance is excellent!  The subject is worthy of much discussion.”

“End felt strange, but I liked the film on a whole.  Colin Firth was amazing as always!”

“Helen Hunt was a little shallow in her role.  She needed another director.”

“I loved it!”

“Helen Hunt’s search for happiness – and ultimate personal revelation - meant she had to confront the fact that she would probably bring unhappiness to those in her life – even those she loved. That was told by the story that bookended the movie. Now about that movie… There were enough feminine fears here that even Oprah would say ‘Enough!’ – a bad marriage, her mother’s death, discovery of a new mother, a failed marriage, dealing with the biological clock and children, dating - and this was all in the space of a few weeks!!!

“A lot of artificiality.  The move did not feel real.”

“Very static, did not flow well.”

“Helen Hunt being self indulgent.  Self indulgent being Helen Hunt!”

“I loved this film.”

“The character of April was not interesting enough to be the main subject of a film.  She was boring, self- involved person who thinks her life is hard because she can’t have a baby…”

“The storyline was not good at all.  It did not flow well.  It left a lot to be desired.  Bette Midler looked younger than Helen Hunt.”

"New York City schoolteachers - or teachers from anywhere else that I know of - do not have sex hanging out the back of a car parked on a street in Manhattan in broad daylight. However if Colin Firth was involved..."

“The acting felt more like a play vs. a movie.  Bette was great.”

“Too sentimental and trying too hard to be ‘real’ and in the process ended up being dishonest.  Bette Midler was fun to watch however.”

“As in the discussion, where were her girlfriends? We teachers are our own and best support group.”

“This movie was self-indulgent and sentimental.  I didn’t think it would ever end.  Bette Midler was the only good thing about this movie.  I hated the way the whole movie was done in close-up.  I hated this film.”

“The topics were pertinent and handled terribly.  Colin Firth was excellent.”

“Redundant and repetitious film.  The film was badly scripted.”

“I was receptive to the themes of this movie, and the beginning was excellent.  But as the complications grew the film got chaotic too.  Maybe it was an appropriate marriage of form and function, but for me it was an unsatisfying cinematic experience.”

“I enjoyed the film.  It was very honest.  I liked the way it all came together at the end.  A bit on the Helen Hunt character being so gorgeous, etc and meeting a new man so soon.  However, she did a very good job of acting and directing.”

“Not up to the caliber of the films that we have seen over the previous weeks.  It could have been a movie of the week on the Lifetime Movie Channel.  However, Bette Midler was great and stole the movie.”
