“Wonderful!”
“Sweet and lovely. It certainly takes you on a quirky journey.”
“Music was great!”
“Maybe a bit too long, but what a pleasure.”
“My kind of movie!”
“Tres bonne!”
“ ‘PARIS 36’ proves there’s nothing like a musical to tell a story that’s true, compelling and completely captivating.”
“Charming French froth. Hints of the horrors to come, the gates of hell had not yet opened. The guests and the Q & A were great!”
“Great movie tied together by the love of father and son. Runs the gamut of viewer reactions to the story, tears, laughter, loathing, etc.”
“As only the French can do it!”
“I kept expecting Nicole Kidman to swing out over the crowd…along with Baz Luhrman’s name on the credits. Love it!”
“One of the best films we have seen this year.”
“Wonderful! Delightful! I loved it!”
“Wonderful! Bit of Piaf and Chavalier in characters. One of the most enjoyable films I’ve seen at MEA.”
“I loved the look of the film, but could have used a little more editing.”
There wasn't a heartstring that wasn't pulled but I readily gave it my heart for more. Wonderful nostalgia mixed with politics as only the French can do it. I loved the poetic realism of the film, no Nazi swastikas, just an x at the political meetings, and the obligatory Eiffel tower seen from every rooftop. Vive La Cinema Francais!
“This is what Judith Crist used to call a ‘movie movie.’ A pure joy experience that recalls the ‘old song and dance’ Hollywood films, but better in the Francais style. The music was terrific and the story silly, but believable. I wish our recession/depression was so picturesque!”
“A moving film. A wonderful meshing of several stories that all led up to the war. Great character development. No sequel is needed. Jojo is the sequel.”
“My only remark is that some of the subtitles blended into the background. Charming and engaging film.”
“Wonderful story, wonderful music, wonderful acting and wonderful sets and scenery.”
“I loved it! Uplifting and hopeful yet filled with much to think about.”
“What an interesting and excellent film. The scenery, acting, humor and sadness were all excellent. The music was lovely and the characters so interesting.”
“What a charming movie! A good reason to wake up this morning and what wonderful guests. Even though it felt light, it dealt with some very dark subjects: gangsters, loss of a father’s access, and communism connected to anti-Semitism. The father needed a better lawyer! Ten years in prison for saving a friend’s life!”
“Tres charming and sentimental. Douce was lovely and has a lovely voice, wonderful face and acts well! I’ll never forget Jacky. Pigoil reminded me of Chaplin’s ‘Little Tramp’ with his pathos. Very enjoyable film, even though the plot for me was predictable, but it did unfold nicely. The Busby Berkley number was great, so were the sets, costumes and staging! A good time for releasing it considering the economic times, people need hope. A film about underclass overcoming the odds is perfect for the times. The cinematography was terrific. The walk through shots backstage and the shots of Douce singing facing the audience worked well and the Busby Berkley number, wow! Yea for ‘Radio Man.’”
“A lovely old fashioned film with a story, lovely music and characters to cheer for. They don’t make movies like this anymore! Although I wasn’t alive in 1936, it was a great trip down nostalgia lane, the knowledge of which I acquired as a ‘young-un’ seated with fascination in front of the television watching the better offerings of ‘MILLION DOLLAR MOVIE.’ The young lady was wonderful as sweet as her name in the movie. All the male actors were wonderful as well!”
“A tender and lovely musical. A fine sense of the political narrative of Paris in 1936. The songs and story touches your heart and the Busby Berkley number was just great.”
“Perfect film for the time!”
