“I’m so glad we saw this film here. I may not have given it much attention otherwise…and boy, would that have been my loss! Wonderful to watch boy become man through his own eyes. The children were amazing. The only other Maori film we’ve seen was ONCE WERE WARRIORS, also about a drunken, abusive husband/father. Our guest was fun. Thanks John, for this interesting experience.”
“Wonderful film! 5 stars!”
“I found this film more depressing than either interesting or entertaining. The characters’ issues are painful to see. Sorry!”
“Wonderful slice of unfamiliar life.”
“Wonderful, beautiful, interesting, intense and light film. Incredible characters. Would have helped if it had subtitles.”
“Great film! Loved it! Loved the kids.”
“Most engaging film. Great acting. Felt the message is that indigenous culture is still alive.”
“Amazing storytelling.”
“NYC is too sophisticated for this type of film.”
“I felt the most sympathetic for the goat, it was poetic justice that the goat ate the ill-gotten cash.”
“One of the worst films I have seen in a long time. I would not have paid to see it. Bad, bad film.”
“As fabulous as New Zealand itself. One of the best films about adolescents in decades. The interaction of the kids was excellent. Real human beings. Clever use of drawings for Rocky’s imagination and pictures of what the riches would bring boy and his dad.”
“Sweet film!”
“The goat was significant: how charming to see boy interact with the animal. However, innocence was lost when the father killed the goat. Boy’s childhood died also.”
