“A perfect hair-on-your-chest summer movie. I even bought popcorn for the 1st time. Having not read the reviews I was pleasantly surprised by the parallels to our time now… right down to a strong female warrior. Similar to BATMAN BEGINS, this film should have been titled ROBIN HOOD BEGINS. If you want an action adventure with no point and a set-up for a sequel, this is your cup of tea.”

“I loved the merging of myth, religion, ethnicity and most importantly hope. The fact that the tale took place where it did also allowed for blend of story, cultural richness and a slice of life in an Irish fishing village. I was entertained and inspired.”

“Who doesn’t smile and coo at an adorable baby, and here there were so many wonderful scenes following the development of children. No language, it’s the universal mother-child bonding, grooming, bathing, feeding, interaction with animals, toys made or bought and sometimes-jealous siblings. Loved it. My absolute favorite scene was the American mother holding up a book titled NO HITTING as her child hit her.”

“A superb documentary by a skilled filmmaker. Mr. Gibney presents all the facts without comment and lets them speak for themselves, yet throws is moments of humor and irony to balance the blows delivered our democracy.”

“A beautiful elegiac piece of lives intertwined, so delicately revealed through intricate insights. I’m amazed this screenplay was written by a man. He was able to show us the inner workings of so many types of women, so many layers. I strongly identified with Kerry Washington’s character of Lucy. I saw two friends go through the same thing. I loved this movie.”

“A modest but skillfully-crafted tale of men and manhood from 30 years ago, and maybe – as the ending indicates – today as well. Great performances, a solid, emotionally gripping story, very nicely directed by Bette Gordon – and one of our best Q&A’s ever! Of course, she’s a teacher!”

“An intensely beautiful and painfully presented picture of grief. A universal emotion that manifests itself differently for each of us. It brought back memories of all those I have lost. I thought of my dear grandmother who outlived two of her children. Fabulous acting; very realistic depictions of grief.”

“Loved it, and really enjoyed our screenwriter guest. The ambiguities of the story create a tension for eroticism that never lets up, not even in the closing frame.  A masterful, enjoyable achievement with wonderful performances throughout.”

“Didn’t know what to expect, and what a surprise! Motherhood reduced (or magnified) to its most intense emotional challenges. Yet not done with muddled screenwriter psychology but a gripping murder mystery. I’ll bet money Hollywood remakes this in 2 years. Great performances, beautifully shot, ably directed. This young filmmaker is going places.”

“I appreciated this slow-paced, contemplative portrait of a fragile young woman grappling with the bewildering world of relationships, or just the growing pains of entering into adulthood, but this film offered no insights, no conflicts or resolution, no drama, and other than Zoe’s performance, little reason to watch.”
